Singing is “not-singing”
There are two ways to teach people to sing.
Many teachers use traditional exercises. They focus on the shapes of vowels, on using specific muscles for breathing, on understanding head voice vs. chest voice, and so forth.
You feel like you’re learning because there are clear-cut concepts and vocabulary. And you will learn, eventually—my voice teaching colleagues aren’t hacks. They just don’t use the most efficient method.
My approach is different: you learn to sing by “not-singing.”
Singing is just a type of vocal noise, so I build from the vocal noises you already know how to make—speech, mostly, but also various slides and sighs and wails.
By tapping into your vocal instinct and intuition, we lay a powerful foundation that makes your singing easy and authentic.

Singers who feel stuck in their careers generally fall into one of two categories:
- They sing like an angel but can’t connect viscerally with their audiences, or
- They’re exciting as hell to watch but lack the vocal technique to maintain stamina.
Good news! Those are both the same problem: Your technique is not grounded in intention.
Because of that, when you perform you’re forced to decide—usually subconsciously—between focusing on your technique or on your connection with your fellow performers and the audience.
